“Corridos from the ‘Hood” brought to life the powerful tradition of Mexican corridos, blending historical narratives with contemporary urban influences to explore the cultural crossroads of Compton. This vibrant exhibition featured multimedia works that captured the essence of traditional Mexican ballads through the lens of modern artists, creating an immersive experience rooted in the stories and sounds of the community.

Corridos, a Mexican ballad tradition, narrate historical events, tales of heroism, romance, and the lives of famous individuals, reflecting the struggles and values of the people they represent. The exhibition examined the rich cultural heritage of these ballads and their evolving fusion with urban sounds like hip-hop, creating a unique expression of life in Compton. By turning to local artists, the show honored the adaptability of corridos and highlighted their continued relevance for new generations.

One of the exhibition’s most fascinating themes was the evolving connection between corridos and the legacy of Black and Brown cowboys in Los Angeles. These stories of resilience and cultural fusion provided an opportunity to explore the broader shared histories of marginalized Black and Brown communities. The exhibition not only explored the music itself but also celebrated Black and Brown cowboy culture in the region.
